so today i’ve been working on a folio that will hopefully get me into RISD in the second half of this year. unfortunatley i have like 2% chance of actually getting in (they only take 2 people from all over the world) but it has been a good chance to look over my best work from last year and put it together in a nice collection. here’s a drawing i did of my camera. to add more to the image, i photographed it pinned to the wall outside my bedroom, i like the warm woody texture in relation with the details of the drawing.

in response to our pattern research, we were prompted to create our own repeat patterns using adobe illustrator. i chose to create a bold quirky design using intense colour and quirky imagery.

researching patterns

Today in Studio C (Design Tech), we’re researching patterns. I came across this artist – mike lowery – who does very loose illustrative patterns. His style isn’t entirely original, but I like the idea of using almost ‘doodling’ like drawings, and repeating them in a patterns.

so basically this video came about because of task we had to do at uni. the task involved making something that had the same basic function as a business card – that was not a business card. the result was limitless and all it had to do was achieve the same thing that we perceived a business card to do. i brainstormed and created a list of the fundamental qualities of a business card – information, promotion, invitation, first impression, identity – essentially however, as a designer, i think the most important function of a business card is to communicate personality. i decided to express my personality through a flip book, that could be handed out, thus giving people a small sample of … myself. i think the medium of a flip book too demonstrates my personality as in itself, it is a creative piece. i used imovie to put these images together and created a short stop-motion film which i then uploaded to youtube. it’s no masterpiece, but i had fun with it.

well the first thing you might ask is why “cheerful whistling permitted”? i would like to say that it has a deep powerful meaning related to the way in which nowadays there is too much censorship and political power dominating our basic rights to express ourselves (through something as simple as a ‘whistle’) … however it really came about from a simple image i found in the book “conform” by saskia folk, which is full of pictures of street art. one clever artist came up with this sign that poignantly stated “cheerful whistling permitted”, which i used as a header for my old uni blog, and i guess it just stuck. i’m not really sure why i have the desire to start this blog, but what i’m hoping to achieve from it is just to have my own little place to express my self and kind of what is going on in my life, and hopefully it will turn into a big creative mess where i can explore ideas and research and ultimately growth. i guess i don’t really know where it’s headed … but here goes nothing …
